Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want
to know about us

How we work, what it costs, how we pick what to cover, and how we keep your data private.

How it works
How does The Oversight Brief identify my representatives?
+

When you enter your home address, we use the Geocodio API to geocode your address and identify your congressional district. Geocodio then returns your current House representative and two U.S. senators directly from their database of official legislator records.

We only show you the three officials whose jobs you personally control at the ballot box — your House representative and your two senators. No officials from other states or districts. No one you can't vote out.

Why only three? You can vote out a senator from a state you don't live in. You can't vote out a president you disagree with between elections. Real accountability is hyper-local. We keep the focus narrow on purpose.
Where does the voting data come from?
+

All voting data comes from the official Congress.gov API, maintained by the Library of Congress. This is the same source Congress uses for its own public records. Every bill name, vote count, and representative vote we display is sourced directly from this API — we don't add editorial interpretation to the raw vote data.

For the House, we pull votes from the House Clerk. For the Senate, we pull from the Senate's official vote records. Both are updated in near-real time as votes are recorded in Washington.

What is the alignment score and how is it calculated?
+

Your alignment score tracks how often your representative votes in line with your stated positions on policy issues. When you sign up, you tell us which issues matter to you (healthcare, climate, the economy, etc.). As your reps cast votes on bills in those categories, we compare their vote to the position you indicated — and calculate a running percentage.

The score is:

  • Non-partisan — we don't tell you what the "right" vote is. We track whether their vote matches your stated position, regardless of party.
  • Career-wide — we track votes across their entire career from day one, not just the current session.
  • Transparent — every vote contributing to the score is visible in your dashboard so you can audit the calculation yourself.

The score sharpens over time as you answer more issue tune-up questions and as your reps cast more votes in your selected categories.

How often is the data updated?
+

Voting data is pulled from Congress.gov and updated regularly throughout the week. The weekly email digest is sent every Monday morning covering votes cast the prior week (Monday through Friday when Congress is in session).

During congressional recesses, your representatives aren't casting votes — so your digest will note when Congress is not in session rather than sending an empty email.

Cost & access
Is this really free? What's the catch?
+

Yes, completely free. There is no catch. The Oversight Brief is free to use, free to sign up for, and free forever. No credit card. No free trial that converts to paid. No premium tier for federal coverage.

Our mission is to democratize civic transparency — putting a paywall in front of your representatives' voting records would directly contradict that. This product should be accessible to every American regardless of income.

The platform is funded through newsletter sponsorships from civic-minded organizations. Sponsors are clearly disclosed, editorially separate, and have no influence on what votes we cover or how we report them.

Do I need to create an account to use the tracker?
+

No. You can enter your address and browse your representatives' voting records without creating an account. The address lookup and vote history are completely open.

An account is required if you want to:

  • Receive the weekly email digest
  • Save your issue preferences
  • See your personalized alignment score
  • Get instant alerts when your reps vote on your selected issues

Creating an account takes about 30 seconds and only requires an email address.

What we cover
How do you decide which votes to include in the weekly brief?
+

We include every recorded vote cast by your representatives in the U.S. House and Senate. We don't filter or editorially select which votes to highlight — if your rep voted on it in Congress that week, it appears in your brief.

What you can filter is which votes appear at the top of your digest, based on the issue categories you select (healthcare, climate, economy, etc.). Votes matching your selected issues are surfaced first. All other votes are still accessible below.

We never decide which votes are "important." That's your call. Our job is to make the complete record accessible, not to curate a highlight reel.
Why don't you cover state legislators too?
+

Right now we cover federal officials only — your U.S. House representative and two U.S. senators. State legislative data (governor, state senators, state house representatives) is on our roadmap.

Federal data is well-structured and accessible through official government APIs. State legislative data is significantly more fragmented — 50 different systems, varying levels of accessibility, and no consistent format. We're building state coverage carefully to ensure the same data quality you get for federal officials.

Is The Oversight Brief politically biased?
+

No. We are deliberately and structurally non-partisan. Here's how we maintain that:

  • All voting data comes directly from official government sources — we don't add editorial framing to vote outcomes.
  • The alignment score is calibrated to your stated positions, not a party platform. A conservative subscriber and a progressive subscriber looking at the same rep will see different alignment scores — both accurate.
  • We never tell you how to feel about a vote or which way a "good" representative should vote.
  • We cover all three of your representatives regardless of their party affiliation.

We're a civic tool, not a political one. The record is the record. What you do with it is up to you.

Your data & privacy
What do you do with my home address?
+

Your address is used only to identify your congressional district and representatives. That's it.

We do not:

  • Sell your address to third parties
  • Share it with political campaigns or advocacy organizations
  • Use it for advertising targeting
  • Store it in connection with your identity unless you create an account

If you browse without an account, your address is processed to identify your reps and is not retained. If you create an account, your address is stored securely to personalize your dashboard and is never sold or shared. See our Privacy Policy for the full details.

Do you sell my data?
+
No. We never sell personal data. Full stop.

Your email address, home address, issue preferences, and voting alignment data are used only to power your personal experience on the platform. They are not sold, rented, licensed, or shared with advertisers, political organizations, data brokers, or any third party.

Our revenue comes from newsletter sponsorships — organizations pay to be featured in the digest. Sponsors do not get access to subscriber data. They buy reach to our audience, not access to it.

How do I delete my account and data?
+

You can delete your account at any time by emailing [email protected] with the subject line "Delete my account." We will permanently delete your email address, address, issue preferences, alignment history, and all associated data within 30 days.

You can also unsubscribe from the weekly email at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email we send. Unsubscribing stops the digest but does not delete your account or data — email the address above if you want full deletion.

Account & settings
How do I change the issues I care about?
+

Sign in to your account, then click the settings icon (⚙️) in the top right corner to open "My Alerts & Issues." You can add or remove issue categories at any time — your alignment score and digest will update to reflect your new selections going forward.

I moved. How do I update my address and representatives?
+

Simply enter your new address in the search bar on the homepage. If you have an account, sign in first — your new representatives will be saved to your profile automatically when you run the search. Your alignment history from your previous address remains in your account for reference.

Why don't I see very recent votes yet?
+

There is typically a 24–48 hour delay between when a vote is cast in Congress and when it appears in our system — the Congress.gov API processes and publishes official vote records on that timeline. If you're looking for a vote from earlier today, it may not be available yet.

During congressional recesses (typically August, Thanksgiving week, and the holiday break), no votes are being cast, so the voting record will not update during those periods.
